The Yoga of Tennis

Tuesday - Thursday, August 9th - 11th
11:30AM - 1:00PM

Tennis is often called the game for life. It’s a great way for people of all ages to stay active and social. Like any activity though, what we do repeatedly can take its toll and wear us down—especially an activity with repetitive asymmetrical movement such as tennis.

Yoga is a system of tools including poses, breathwork and meditation that are intended to help us identify and release habits and patterns of movement, thought, and feeling that don’t serve us and that increase our suffering.

When applied to tennis, we can use these tools to refine our awareness of how our body is moving and shift habitual movement that stresses parts of us and underutilizes other parts—keeping our knees and shoulders from taking all the wear and tear of the game. We can also balance our physiology to keep our energy and metabolism at healthy levels and we can increase our ability to focus and concentrate on achieving our goals, whether it be winning the July Mixed Doubles tournament or cultivating more peace of mind.

The Yoga of Tennis is a series of 3 workshops being offered to members at the East Chop Tennis Club this July to help you stay healthy and improve your tennis game.

Members can attend one or all sessions. These sessions are appropriate for all levels and no previous experience with yoga is required. Takeaways from the workshops include:

  • New awareness of your body and your breath to help you execute efficient and successful movement when playing tennis and when moving in general.

  • Knowledge and skills to improve your strength, mobility, and range of motion in a safe and consistent way.

  • Daily practices that can contribute to longevity of your tennis game and a healthy lifestyle overall.

Session 1 – Strength and Stability - The interrelationship of stability and mobility, creating a strong base of support, and breath awareness in developing core strength. Includes a moving yoga practice focused on strengthening the lower body (feet, knees, legs, hips, sacrum, and low back) and improving balance. Written copies of the practice will be shared.

Session 2 – Range and Mobility - The connection between respiratory musculature and movement, breath awareness in increasing range of motion and building resilience around pre-existing limitations in the elbows and shoulders. Includes a moving yoga practice that focuses on increasing somatic awareness and increasing mobility in the upper body and limbs. Written copies of the practice will be shared.

Session 3 – Focus and Concentration - The energetic and physiological effects of breathing and the value of breathwork in increasing focus and concentration. Includes short moving yoga practice followed by breathwork and meditation. A recorded breathwork and meditation practice will be shared.

Cost: $35 per session or
$100 for all three
