People often ask me why I love to guide people in one-to-one sessions. You might wonder that too. Instead of giving you my perspective, I'll share a guest blog from my client, Lindsey. Her description of the rewards of the experience that I get to witness is way better than anything I could share::
I’m the type of person if given the choice between accomplishing something (doing) or sitting with myself (being), I’m choosing doing. My list isn’t getting any shorter, ya know? One day, I got clever and began adding yoga TO my list. I think I saw it as a post on Instagram. And yes, it was vinyasa. Because apparently I also need to “win” at yoga. :) I’m what you’d call a high achiever. And I’m no unicorn. In my world, I’ve met a lot of high achievers. And I can tell you we don’t need fixing, but we do need awareness. And that’s exactly the gift I was given by Jen Peterson. My story starts like most people’s. I’m juggling a million details, I say “yes” a lot more than I say “no,” and the idea of being asked to hold a pose for 3+ minutes is a luxury I *know* I can not afford. I didn’t have a major epiphany that led me to start practicing restorative/yin yoga. I didn’t have a heart attack or even minor indigestion. It went more like this: more irritability + sunday blahs = need to do something about it. When I talked to Jen about what yoga practices would be most helpful, she suggested yin yoga to bring more balance to my “doing” energy; to refuel the tanks so I stay nourished. The best way I can describe the work that Jen and I do together is that, knowing my body and my needs, she helps me BE. For 90 minutes, I get to show up exactly as I am--and to find contentment with that. I don’t have to pretend. (Just typing that makes me feel better.) Throughout each curated pose, she helps me melt away any “shoulds” and quiet my monkey mind. She reminds me that this BEING time is not only precious, it’s necessary. And I’m coming to learn that it’s the key to showing up as the best possible version of myself so I can serve others.
